What’s the difference between a real estate agent and broker?

  • To become an agent, you first have to take the required number of classes and then pass a state-licensing exam.
  • To become a broker, you have to be an agent, take more classes, and then pass another state-licensing exam.
  • Brokers can open, run, or own real estate offices, or work independently.  Agents, however, have to work for brokers, who are responsible for them.
  • For most clients, agents and brokers can help you equally well.  Just make sure they’re state-licensed.
  • Work with the most experienced professional you feel comfortable with, irrespective of title.

What’s the difference between a Realtor and a broker?

  • A Realtor is a broker or agent who belongs to the National Association of Realtors (N.A.R.) and subscribes to their code of ethics and conduct.
  • There are a total of about 2 million real estate agents and brokers in the U.S.  750,000 of them belong to the N.A.R.
